Through years of working closely with individuals and their loved ones, I’ve seen the heavy toll it exacts, not just on the individual struggling with substance use but on the entire family unit, in the form of financial, emotional, and spiritual burdens.
Dear Families, I once heard a speaker talk about sitting in front of the ocean and trying to stop the waves from crashing on the shore – that this is what powerlessness felt like. While the speaker was talking about their drinking and powerlessness over alcohol, I could relate to what he was saying.
Our program is committed to addressing the complex needs of individuals who find themselves caught in the cycle of relapse. Through this work, we’ve identified a critical factor that often influences the success or setback of a patient’s recovery journey: the role of family dynamics, specifically enabling and codependency.
I’ve witnessed firsthand the complex challenges these clients and their families face. Dual diagnosis, a term for those who struggle with both mental health disorders and substance abuse, requires an approach that is both comprehensive and tailored to individual needs.
One of the most challenging scenarios we encounter is the “chronic relapser.” These are individuals who, despite repeated attempts at recovery, find themselves caught in a cycle of relapse. Understanding the characteristics and warning signs of chronic relapsers is crucial for developing more effective strategies to support their path to sustained recovery.
When viewing Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) through the lens of chronic addiction, its implications become even more profound. Many people simply do not understand what BPD is, how it affects the individual, and why. Here, we take the time to address some common misunderstandings about the disorder and how it relates to chronic relapse.
