Codeine Addiction

What is Codeine?

Codeine is an opiate that metabolizes into morphine as it undergoes chemical transformation in the body.  Codeine is used primarily to treat pain and anxiety.  As with most members of the opiate family of narcotics (e.g., Heroin and Morphine), Codeine acts to depress respiratory functioning and impairs the central nervous system.

Common Side Effects with Codeine Usage

Common side effects with Codeine usage include nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, sleepiness, and difficulty with urination.  Codeine is known to interact with other medications, so please check with your doctor before use.  Many individuals have reported allergic reactions to Codeine that cause skin inflammation and swelling.

Known Side Effects from Codeine Abuse

Codeine abuse often results in poor physical coordination, loss of motor control, and a dulling or deadening of the senses.  Excessive amounts of Codeine can literally shut down the respiratory system, resulting in death.  Combining Codeine with other over the counter pain medications can lead to liver disease, renal failure, and internal hemorrhaging.

Withdrawal Symptoms of Codeine

Withdrawal symptoms are severe for heavy users that abruptly break their normal pattern of intake.  Symptoms such as abdominal cramping, sweats, loss of appetite, diarrhea, headache, and mood swings are common.  Codeine is milder than other opiates used for pain, so even the most severe withdrawal symptoms usually pass within a few days.  Psychological dependency, however, may take many months to subside.

Long Term Treatment for Codeine Addiction

Codeine dependency leads to physical and psychological addiction.  Codeine addiction creates a false sense of euphoria, but it is also known to reduce the sex drive.  The withdrawal symptoms from Codeine can be so miserable that people continue to take the drug until they realize that they need a professional addiction specialist to help them successfully get off the drug.

Long term treatment programs for Codeine addiction utilize a tapering process that gradually reduces the amount of drug ingested until it is discontinued.  Additional counseling and therapy may also be required for those that experience the psychological effects of addiction to Codeine on top of the physical symptoms of addiction.
