In the U.S., addiction affects millions of people each year. When it takes hold, it impacts the affected individual and their loved ones in numerous ways — health and well-being suffer, relationships are damaged, financial difficulties arise and dangerous or compromising situations often become a daily occurrence. Although many people don’t realize it, those with substance use disorders often face mental health challenges as well. According to the American Medical Association, about half of those who struggle with addiction also have a diagnosable psychiatric condition such as anxiety or depression. Mental health disorders can interfere with a person’s mood, thinking and behavior and make it difficult to cope with the demands of everyday life. When addiction is also present, known as a dual diagnosis, these difficulties are compounded and finding effective treatment becomes more challenging.

At Burning Tree, we understand the complexities that surround co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Our goal is to provide clients with a place where they can take a step back from the stressors, challenges and obstacles of daily life and focus on not only healing from addiction but on restoring their mental health as well.

After 25 years in the recovery industry, we know that achieving independence from substance use is about much more than abstaining from drugs or alcohol. Meaningful progress and lasting recovery without relapse come from exploring the deep-seated issues that often surround addiction and addressing them head-on.

Our professional and compassionate team guides clients as they undertake this journey to heal from addiction and rediscover a sense of purpose, balance, and belief in their ability to live a fulfilling life free of drugs or alcohol.

Understanding Mental Health Disorders

In the past, physical conditions and diseases have received more attention than ailments of the mind. Advances in medical technology have given us a deeper understanding of the importance of mental health, however, and we now know the processes in the brain can become disrupted or unbalanced. Despite this, we still have a long way to go. Mental health is often shrouded in stigma and myth, preventing an open, honest dialogue that encourages empathy and compassion. Due to the stigma associated with mental health, some people may avoid seeking help due to fear, embarrassment or shame, and scarce treatment options limit availability and access. For those who also struggle with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, receiving proper care that addresses the full scope of their needs is even more difficult.

At Burning Tree, our goal is to bridge the gap between mental health and substance use treatment to provide dual-diagnosis clients with the comprehensive care they need to heal.

We thoroughly evaluate each client upon intake and address psychological and emotional needs at all of our facilities. Some of the mental health disorders we treat include:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Borderline personality disorder

Treating and managing these disorders is as important to one’s overall well-being as fixing a broken bone or keeping the heart healthy. Emotional and mental health play an essential role in many aspects of life, such as productivity and effectiveness at work or school, relationship stability, how easily one copes with or adapts to changes and adversity, and even overall physical health. Our treatment programs acknowledge the importance of mental health and empower clients to take control of their symptoms so they can enjoy improved wellness and focus on achieving the life they envisioned for themselves.

Connection between Mental Health & Substance Use

Mental health and substance use disorders are closely linked, affecting almost half of all individuals who seek treatment for addiction. Co-occurring disorders are often interwoven and interact on a deep level, complicating the treatment process and making recovery more difficult. This is because substance use disrupts neurochemical processes and often produces severe symptoms such as paranoia, irrational thinking, anxiety and depression. The onset of these symptoms can mask the presence of mental health disorders and trigger latent or underlying conditions. Some individuals may also turn to drugs or alcohol and self-medicate to cope with their mental health disorder, especially if it isn’t managed properly. While this provides temporary relief, it often exacerbates existing symptoms and creates a cycle that may lead to increased substance use and addiction. This complex relationship between mental health and substance use disorders means that if a client with a dual diagnosis enters treatment for addiction and their mental health needs are not addressed, their symptoms will be waiting for them once they return to daily life. They may have made progress in recovery, but it’s essential for them to learn how their mental health and substance use disorders relate so they can develop better ways of managing their symptoms. By understanding the factors that influence and drive their addictive behavior, clients are better equipped to handle stressors or triggers that may arise in the future. At Burning Tree, our experienced team goes above and beyond to address the full scope of every client’s needs to help them get the most out of each therapeutic experience. We recognize that meaningful recovery involves identifying why someone turned to drugs or alcohol in the first place and provide highly personalized, integrated care so they can begin to heal on a deeper level and achieve the happy, healthy life they deserve.
